While look at the rear for any stickers or markings I noticed the PO hadn't tightened the bolt for the upper torque bushing. Also, one bolt on the driveshaft to axle was loose, another two were only barely snug
My '90 740 turbodiesel with M46 is doing 70mph indicated at about 2900rpm. In 4th with OD activated (i.e. '5th'). That's standard as far as I'm aware.

Mine does about 60 at 3000 rpm. Makes for uncomfortable highway driving, but it does pick up nice...
