Default Need a manual flywheel

So, the story goes:

I'm swapping a D24 of unknown provenance into a VAG product... I need a flat flywheel with pilot holder to complete the secret sauce.

I've looked for a couple of months now, but I don't know the secret code to get an 8-bolt flywheel that will a) fit the engine, and b) fit the pressure plate.

I can modify things that exist, but I prefer to badge-engineer as much as possible.

Thanks,

Q

All the flywheels that I know of are dog-dish. You could have the stock d24/d24t flywheel machined flat and drilled for the pressure plate of your choice.

Could you use a flywheel from an Audi gas or diesel 5cyl car? Most of the front and back of the engine on the D24 and D24T is identical to the 5 cylinder Audi family, including the bellhousing pattern, and I would guess the back of the crank is the same as well. Checking those might increase the choices you have. The pilot bearing in the D24 and related 5cyl engines fits directly in the back of the crank but maybe other related applications put it in the flywheel.

What does the flywheel for a stock 924 engine look like, does it not fit? What is the pressure plate you are using from?

Huh... I'm not getting notifications from the site.

Anyway, to answer the questions:

Flywheel looks like this

My plan is to use the pressure plate and disc from the Porsche, but I suspect that most discs are the same diameter.

Maybe a dog-dish with pressure plate and the Porsche disc?

I was looking at other 5/6 cylinder options, but I wasn't trusting the photos they had with them for reference. I live kind of in the boonies, so no good junkyards to crawl through.

What's the ID on the Volvo pilot?

I think the ID of the pilot is around 15~16mm.

Thanks!

I think a contact has found a flywheel that will work... apparently from a diesel Jetta.

I'll post up in the build thread once I get it.

I'm not sure about the newer 2.0 diesels, but I think the 1.9 and 1.6 have 6 a bolt flywheel vs the 8 bolts on the D24

The picture he sent is of an 8-bolt flywheel with the same-looking pressure plate pattern.

For the price, I'm willing to be disappointed...
