Default 5W-30 synthetic ok for D24 non-turbo?

Owners manual recommends 20W-50 (or similar) for the temps we encounter here in SoCal.

Shop put in synthetic 5W-20. (castol magnatek)

According to the chart in the manual, that isn't recommended for temps above 70F.

Should I worry about it?

Car is a 1982 245 with 106k orig miles. Motor is in great shape.

Thanks!

You need to find out if castrol magnatec is rated for diesel engines. "S" ratings are for gasoline engines "C" ratings cover diesel engines. Amsoil Heavy Duty diesel 5w-30 is 100% synthetic and is rated for diesel and gasoline engines . So the shop installed 5w-20? Or 5w-30? 5w-20 seems very light for a D24.

Ive used a few different brands and weights of oil but my favorite so far is Delo 5w40 full synthetic. It's available at the Walmart nearby my girlfriends house for a very good price by the gallon.

Great advice as usual and thanks so much to all.

The castrol that is in there is 5W-30 (5W-20 was a typo) but it is SN rated, so not appropriate for the diesel.

Will get it changed pronto.

Thanks again for the quick replies and great info.

Very unfortunate they charged you synthetic price for the wrong oil. You can get Amsoil online or thru a local dealer. Amsoil.com. I neglected to mention since you are not Turbo charged you can get the full 25,000 miles or one year oil charge interval. It will not damage your engine. Amsoil pioneered synthetic engine oil. Its been available since 1972.

Interesting posts since the concensus in the UK is that the seals do not like synthetic oils. Since the same numbers come up for VW and Volvo, they are obviously the same seals.
