I finally fired it up today! It runs great trans works great and so does the clutch. No major issues. I did notice the passenger side motor mount is too weak to hold the motor in the right place, so the fan rubs on the shroud and the turbo rubs the frame. It was new from rock auto, but had a smaller diameter, so it squished more. It was the only on I could find at the time. I have since ordered a transmission mount because they seem identical. If all else fails I will use another drivers side mount with some slight modifications.

I did not intercool it yet because I did not like the intercooler's configuration. I ordered a different one with same-side in and out.

I ran the engine long enough to heat it up. Then I did the hot torque on the headbolts. After that I have been letting it run and driving it up the road and back once in a while to break it in. No smoke, and blow by does not seem excessive.

For some reason I was expecting to do some major work on the speedometer, but found it to work already! Evidently the sensor is on the axle and it is electronic.

This must not be the case for Jason's T5 swap then? The ad with the car for sale stated the speedo was off by 10-15 MPH.

I finally got around to finishing adding the intercooling and air filter, along with the associated piping.

I checked what boost I am getting with a gauge, and I can easily get a solid 10 psi. If I push it, I can get 12 or 13 close to redline. All my pipes stayed together at this pressure, and my intercooler seems to work well (based on feeling the difference between the inlet and outlet pipe temperatures).

But now a little rework has to be completed.. I was losing transmission fluid out the rear by the seal. This came from when I had to move the shifter back. I made a plate to block the original mount area, and popped out a plug also extending the linkage. The plate had a new mount for the shifter on it. Then fluid would pool in the area where the shifter used to be, and come out where the extended linkage was. Really no seal can be made, since the linkage moves in/out, as well as swings back and forth.

My plan of attack is to remove the tail housing and build a small box to retain the fluid and drain it back to the trans. I already removed the driveshaft and crossmember that holds the trans so I could lower it and remove the tail housing.

I attached a pic.

You can see the fluid in the area where the shifter used to be, and the hole where it comes out by the extended linkage. The plate I made is on the jack. Once I remove the tail housing, I'll be able to mock up the box and fabricate it from aluminum probably. Sealing will be with RTV. I'm not concerned about it if it drips, right now it will leave a line of trans fluid on the road when I accelerate. Can't have that!

Very nice work! What year is your 240 TD? Some have suggested adding a shim to the engine mount for adding clearance for the turbocharger.

This is actually a 1983 760.

Also, I think I found an easier solution to to the fluid issue. Someone suggested a rubber boot.

I found this: http://m.advanceautoparts.com/mt/sho...n_jtt_redirect

I think it will work, when I get a little time I am going to try it. It looks like it should be able to handle a little side to side swing, and the in and out of the shift linkage.

Leaks are intolerable. I would be interested in knowing what RPM you are at in 5th gear at 75 MPH. Especially if your 760 was formerly an automatic. I think the automatic transmissions had 3.91 to 1 final drive ratios.

We, the LT fraternity, would like to know whether these boots are available in Europe. ?Is there a part number which we could use over here from a Volvo.

The gearshift in the LT has three of these boots, 2" x 7/8" x 4"long for you chaps, and they are no longer available from VW and searching endless catalogues is far from cathartic.

I had a problem with my passenger side engine mount from rock auto also. I found that the 240 diesel mount works and is correct. Ordered an 84 240 diesel mount i believe. The parts are just wrong for the 740 mount no matter what year you look up. I have to use the quarter inch shim for the turbo to clear the frame rail.
