Hi everyone, I am glad to be a member of this forum!
My name is Ian, I am 20 years old and work on Cummins engines for a living.
I am a total newbie to the D24 engine and volvos in general, diehard 12V Cummins guy
I made the plunge and got a 1985 Volvo 740GLE with the D24T, automatic as a new DD for myself, as the 70 mile trip to work every day was hurting the wallet @ 18mpg.
Here is my volvo saga.
I bought the 745 in Medford OR, went up, saw the car, bought it, and left it at my dad's shop. Unable to return and get it, my dad said he'd bring it down to me. Here's where the fun part begins. He towed it down (I thought he was going to drive it) on a tow dolly, rear wheels down, with the driveshaft installed.

So, my auto is toast.

I found an '84 D24 powered 245 for sale with the M47 for very little money up in Oregon again. I believe it is owned by a forum member, and has IP issues.

I am wondering if I can make it a bolt-up swap using the 245 as a donor vehicle. I much prefer manual transmissions, hence why I am preferring to go this route rather than drop in another automatic.

If I can't bolt this in and have it done in a weekend, this swap is not practical for me, as I am very busy with work.

If that's the case, I am more inclined to put another auto in it. What vehicles can I source one out of at a salvage yard?

Also, I am assuming my current auto is toast. Here are its symptoms in case it may be (somewhat) easily repairable? Has fluid, does not smell burnt. Shifting into drive or reverse doesn't do anything, acts like it is still in neutral. Car was driving fine before it was towed here.

Welcome.

Not sure what you are asking? Are you wanting to know if you can take the M47(?) out of the 240 and put it in your 740? I put M47(?) because the diesel 240s & 740/760 got either the M46 (manual) or ZF4hp22l (auto) transmissions.

1. Bellhousing & flywheel should bolt up to the D24T but check the trans angle is different between 240 & 7xx series. Engine sits more upright in the 7xx. Don't want your shifter stick at a funny angle! Shifter cage may also be different. EDIT: (later) So I guess the 240 parts donor would not be that useful as it would probably put the shifter lever poking into your knee.

2. Need pedal box, clutch cable, shifter boot (& console insert?), OD relay for 7xx.

3. Need manual driveshaft for 7xx, (at least the front portion?)

If you had a lift and all necessary skills, tools, and parts you could do it in a weekend.

Could swap another auto in one day easy. Just be careful with the kickdown cable.

I know you say you prefer std over auto, so do I, but with this engine, the ZF auto seems to be the better choice for driveability and performance (I have one of each). The manual can get slightly better MPG.

Thank your dad for his helpfulness but he may have damaged the auto tranny towing it that way. What distance/speed?

How long do you wait for it to engage in D or R?

I too was surprised that the '84 donor I found has the M47, but it is the true 5spd, not the 4spd with OD.

OK, good to know about needing all those parts. Perhaps better to find a M/T 7 series donor at a salvage yard and get all those parts? Do you know if the M47 from a gas 7 series will bolt to my diesel? If I find said car (7 series M/T donor) is the driveshaft length the same between the sedan and the wagon?

I do have a lift and tools.

What donor vehicles can I pull an auto out of to bolt up to my 740?

I have given it about 15 seconds to engage. Before being towed, the trans engaged into gear almost immediately. It was towed somewhere around 900 miles at highway speeds. I am fairly sure it's toast.

It says for the 1985 year, the 740GLE TD's got the 4HP22, not the 4HP22L. Doing some research, many BMWs use this trans, are they any different than the Volvo model?

Ok, small update.
Put the Volvo up on the lift, found out I have the 4HP22, not the 4HP22L. This is good news, as I can't source a HP22L anywhere. I found a suitable 4HP22 at a salvage yard for $180 with a warranty out of an 87 740GLE sedan with the 2.3L.

Can't believe everything you read. I've had two '85 740gle TDs so far and they are both 4HP22L. Member v8volvo has had several also.

The tag on my trans says 4HP22. I found a rebuilt auto with TC on ebay for $250 plus $200 freight, so I ended up going that route. Came out of a 85' 740GLE TD wagon just like mine. Thanks for the help!

Interesting, Is that `Volvo Changes` link talking about the USA market?

If yes....then I thought the last year of TD here (usa) was 1985. Maybe I`m wrong and the USA td stickshift edition was the one last sold in 1985 here?....idk. I believe the m46 td volvo was a 1985 thing in the usa, yes. Or that`s only true for wagons? Then there was the `last` 1986 usa td volvo with auto tranny. idk.


If it is about the EU market, then I don`t know why I can`t see the later diesel editions, like a 1987 m46 760GLE turbodiesel that I had. I`m confused but whatever it is, it is not nice that we did not get the 900s in the USA (the diesels)!

85 was the only year for TD manual 745.

Default ZF killed while car being towed

I know the auto transmission bricks are somewhat sensitive but very sturdy if maintained and some say they are better for city driving... All my Volvos were standard shifters, Automatics are so much different to drive. I heard they hate to be revved in P or N, not to mention towing on rear wheels.
Sad story, I hope you and Dad can find a replacement soon, or as a `family-project`, convert to m46. Pictures wanted!
