The a/r is normally stamped on the exhaust housing, and sometimes on the compressor housing but not always. Often, there is a tag that will list the specs. Finding a decent turbo at the yard is probably not going to be easy. By the time you rebuild it, you probably should have just bought a new chinese one off ebay. They actually work quite well. I have used them on a number of different turbo setups from my D24T to turbo setups on air cooled vw engines. I'm not aware of any database of turbos and OE applications, but someone else may have a suggestion on that.
