I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the 5.7s bad reputation is from people not taking care of them, just like with the D24... Although I (my dad actually) had really bad luck with the two 6.2 diesels we had. The first one suddenly blew a head gasket and hydrolocked without overheating first (or any other warning or explanation), and the second suddenly threw a rod at light throttle with no warning. We also could never get V belts to last more than a month or so on either, because they had a weird design where two belts went on the same pulley with different size grooves, so they constantly fought each other and slipped.

They were really nice before they died though- great fuel economy and torque.
