Sounds like you had a problem with your 240, something was not in good shape.
I have been running my turbo diesel 240 with the stock radiator and large inter cooler in front of it, injection pump has been maxed for the last 70,000 miles and I have never had a issue with it heating up.
I would not cut anything on your car to install the 740 radiator.
