Guessing by your description of the final 180deg. torquing instruction, that points to a MLS head gasket. Are those the instructions that came with the gasket?

MLS head gasket surface looks like shiny steel sheet. Fiber head gasket surface looks and feels more like gray cardboard.

My thinking was, since the fiber head gasket is believed to be more forgiving of surface imperfections, and even overall surface roughness, that you may be OK with your 165deg twist instead of the specified 180deg. But then again, the fiber gasket will need the additional 90deg bolt twist after the first warmup, and again another after the first ~1000 miles.

The original style TTY torque to yield head bolts are not the best for achieving and maintaining head to block clamping force. They are used because of assembly line ease of assembly and time/cost efficiencies, etc.

What was the obstruction for bolt #1? I could see possible obstructions for the rearmost bolts, with the hood hinges but #1 is in the middle of the head.

Regarding the locked-up IP, had you done any work on it since the last time it was running?
