I used a John Deere color on one I put together a couple of years ago -- actually liked the way it came out, a little bolder than the original green but not too far off.
I prefer low gloss black personally but I think most others would disagree. My preference is because I'm a pessimist, I know the thing is going to end up with some black oil leaking on it somewhere someday down the road and I'd rather have the mess be less obvious...
