21 mpg is horrible, I've never driven an auto d24 but I assume it should do better then that!
I have added turbos to many d24 engines, I have never had any issues. Keep the EGT's down and the engine longevity will not be affected.
The D24 being said as having softer blocks is just a myth. I have built around 10 of these engines. It's seems the d24 and d24t wear equally the same.
