Photobucket changed its policies a year or two ago and that resulted in the loss of many photos like these all over the web that had previously been hosted by them for free. There is lots of info on this out there. The only way the photos could come back in their original state would be if the original poster who owns the photos allowed themselves to be extorted and paid Photobucket's price to get everything back. Thus there's no way for us, not being the owners, to restore these so that they are visible in a thread like this to my knowledge, although someone said there might be ways to still view the individual pictures with some kind of workaround and effort.
It's a lot of work to go back and re-host and re-link all the photos for a thread like this so I wouldn't get hopes up that it will ever happen. Sometimes it seems like people put the work in to do it if it's a critical tutorial thread that is widely used and relied upon, but for just a for-fun project narrative like this one it is probably not likely, unfortunately.
Blame Photobucket and their greedy money grab. It makes sense that their service wouldn't be free, and would have been fair for them to charge a fee from the start, but switching up the deal after a lot of folks (and forums like this one) were already relying on it on the basis of it being free was an ugly move.
