Default Intermittent failure to start

So finally got the 85 740TD running for my kid, but what has happened this week is a synopsis for how it works (or doesn't). Lo/hi temps are 75/100, so no cold start issues.

1. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday - 2 good, quick starts
2. Wednesday 3 rough starts (longer cranking), then won't start at all, just cranks

One started it runs fine. Since this is not a new problem, I have checked/done the following:

1. Glow plugs good, getting voltage
2. Fuel solenoid working, getting voltage
3. New filter and filter o-rings appear sealed
4. Cleaned injectors
5. Checked for air in the fuel lines, by placing clear tubing from A. tank - filter and B. filter-pump inlet (tubing in place now). No bubbles in either,
BUT now that car won't start, there is no fuel in the tube. Priming by manually dumping fuel in sometimes works.

The injector pump was new, but it sat for 4-5 years before I bought it. I suspect that the shaft seal may be slowly pulling air in, until it air locks and won't move fuel anymore. But how can I confirm this? The pump screams 'do not disturb' with the glyptal and the lock wire, and I have no experience with these, so I am hesitant to tear into it.

Where do I go from here? I have put so much time into this car, and really like it, but I am ready to sell, because I can't have it stranding my daughter all the time. Thanks. Bill in AZ
