I found out: The additional lanes on turbo engines are drilled for piston cooling. Without they can overload if you enforce too much power.
BTW: tensioning system of the timing belt does not depend of the vehicle's age.
I had a '95 945 D24TIC, where the belt had to be tentioned by the water pump. It had the original engine. The same with my '88 764 D24TIC. Another 945 from 93 and 95 had a tentioning pulley. So check always out what parts you need before you replace it.
