Default opinions on adding a turbo to a NA D24

So I have spoke with a few folks on this matter. I have a 1984 244 Diesel and it has just over 90K original miles on it . The car has cost me almost nothing as I have been able to piece together parts from my collection of junk to keep the car going good. The D24 is mated to the BW55 .. the auto 3 speed. I can only do about 21mpg in this car . I have the engine tuned well from what I read. I have it set right at the line of blowing smoke. So it doesn't blow fuel out the tailpipe . I do get a lot of blow by though.

I really think this engine should do better on the mpg . I am going to getting the manual bell housing and I have the rest of the parts to convert it like the flywheel and such . But until then I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on putting stock turbo parts from a D24T on the engine.

So from what I have gathered the D24 came with a lower zinc cast block and the D24T was a higher Zinc based block . From what I have been told adding a turbo would most likely wear the engine out sooner on the D24 and it can't handle it. is this true? I just want to add a little bit of pep to the car with a small turbo and increase its efficiency .
