Bosch VE input shaft seal

How hard is it to change the input shaft seal on the Bosch VE pump?

I saw there is a special Volvo tool, but I don't have one of those unfortunately!

Can it be changed without a pump strip?

Played with timings from 0.88 to 1.05. In my case, the best setting with the 12mm pump seems to be 0.96. Feels strongest on boost, and also giving marginally better MPG.

Feels good, just a shame...

Yeh, I didn't think any looked particularly bad - only really 11&12 which looks obviously tight. I remember the last time I checked (5 years ago) they were right on the low end of spec. That's also...

Valve adjustments

Checked my valves the other day, and I just want some advice on what to adjust them to. My car always sounds a bit 5 cylinder, so I was hoping to find some of them very tight.

I checked them hot,...

Also interested - and, whether there are any cheaper/easier sourced alternatives that can be used - they seem a fairly standard shape.

Valve Shims

Where can I get a mixed set of valve shims for a reasonable price?

My cars always sounded 5-cylindery when warm. After getting injectors checked and putting on a completely different pump (rebuilt...

Ok thanks. I have tried 0.88, 0.93 and now 1.05 (it moved when I tightened it up). 0.93 felt the best in terms of spool and power.

1.05 is too far I think - bit clattery around 2000rpm, and feels...

Yes, very happy it was a simple fix. You wouldn't have thought so with the amount of smoke and noise it was making!!

Well, the timing is actually now "wrong". When I reset it to 0.9-1.0 last...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Fixed it last night on the work car park, thanks to my wife bringing tool supplies!

Is there anything in the pump that could cause this?

No, normally starts very quickly - and did this morning before I drove to work.

That long cranking on a hot engine is definitely "something new" - along with the rattle and smoke.

Last night I...

Help! Sudden loss of power, loads of smoke and rattles

I reset the timing last night from 0.88 to 0.98mm.

Ran fine this morning, no rattles, no smoke, until a mile from the office, when I pulled away on a hill around 3000rpm, it suddenly lost all...

Effects of timing (12mm pump)

I've installed my 12mm pump now, and have timing set to 0.88 at the moment. My old pump was set to 1.05mm (thought I'd set it to 1.00, but obviously not!

I'm going to advance it a bit more, but...

Testing shows the injectors are still in good condition, no issues with Pop pressures/dripping. Think I've done about 50K since fitting the Monark nozzles.

So, I'll stick with them for now. Will...

I'm getting my injectors tested this week while they are out.

Big question is, what do I do if they need work?

Standard 293?
GTD 273? Bosch or Monarch?
297?
Xud?

And what pressure?
