I'm pulling my 1985 740 engine block with the M46 attached is there a way to remove the shifter or do I have to remove the triangle bar bracket from the tranny first? thanks for your help

Great that helps a lot. Local shop has quoted $1000.00 minimum. Been quite awhile since they have seen one. Do I just take a wire wheel to it to clean the chambers?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. As soon as I can find an intake gasket I'll pull my 84 and see how it looks. I lot simpler motor to work on than the 85.

As I dismantle my back up motor, 85 with 153K mile. The intake was very clean at one and two but three thru six were really clogged. Any ideas? Exhaust valves leaking? Seems like an easy maintenance...

I have the craftsman socket and it's to thick and hits the head on three and no way I can get it on 5 & 6 without moving the pump. My 84 pump looks to be in the same position, very close to the head....

When you say rotate the pump out of the way. is it just the large bolt on the front mount. I can see a bit of groove that would let it rotate out. Or do I have to remove the belt from the pump?

I've looked at it closely and don't see any cracks. It's an automatic and the donor car has the 4 speed w/overdrive and is a year newer and 50 K more miles on it. Just a thought.
