Looking for the Tappet Compressor for Valve Shims

I am looking for a place to buy the hook-like tool to slide under the cam and compress the tappets to remove the shims with the can installed. I can't remember - would one designed for a rabbit work?

The Rabbit one will not quite work, the VW style valvetrain on the 4cyl engines is slightly different from the Audi 5cyl and Volvo 6cyl engines (and the Audi 4cyl actually, as used in the Porsche 924 and some AMC products and quite different from the VW 4cyl, which is what's found in the Rabbit, Golf, Jetta.... and.... some models of the Audi 4000, which is an Audi that either has an Audi 5cyl engine, or a VW 4cyl! Confused yet?).

You'll need the type designed for the Audi engines. The diameter of the camshaft for the VW motor is smaller and the hook-type VW tool doesn't work on them. The Audi-type tool is shaped like a letter J. The VW version is more common but both are still widely available.

Here's what the two look like - upper J-shaped one is the Audi type which is correct for D24, the lower one is the VW 4cyl version which will NOT WORK. Note the difference in the radius of the hooked end between the two versions.

For some reason the pictures are not showing up for me. But thank you for the information. Based on this - this should work, right?

...and this would not, correct?

Thanks again,

Hazet 2574-1 = VAG 2078

I cannot find that Hazet anywhere. Google brings up an old thread with one for sale here, but it is 6 years old and I highly doubt it is still available. Amazon comes up empty, and I can only find the 2574 on eBay.

Re-examining both the eBay ads I posted a couple days ago, I don't think either one will work.

I'm starting to think I will have to make one. The last engine I rebuilt, I got by without having one, but it was years ago and I can't remember how I did it.

As a last resort you can modify a VW tappet depressor tool, it won't work nearly as good as the one designed for the d24/t but will work. I ground the inside of the hook with a larger profile to fit around the larger camshaft. I used it for many years before I ended up getting my hands on a Volvo tool.

Thanks for the tip! I'll probably get the cheaper one from eBay to use as a starting point.

Here's a 2574-1 for big bucks, special order:
http://chadstoolbox.com/hazet-2574-1...djusting-tool/

And I see no reason why that 2078A tool you linked to in an ebay auction above wouldn't work, that's the correct number and looks like the right shape. Not the cheapest but not unreasonably priced. Why do you think it won't work?

In any case, if it's still available, your best bet may be to just buy the factory Volvo tool, Volvo # 9995196; if you can get it it's likely to be as cheap or cheaper than any of the aftermarket options and less of a hassle than trying to homebrew something or rolling the dice on an ebay purchase and hoping the right thing shows up in the mail. Another member was able to purchase one through Rotunda a few years back for $40. If that's still possible it's pretty well guaranteed the best deal you'll find -

I have both the Hazet tool and the Volvo tool, and the Hazet version is nicer, but both work identically well. I had a KD version of the VW 4cyl type that was poorly made and would slice off metal shavings when in use, so if you decide to try to make your own or modify the VW version, watch out that you don't end up doing more harm than good. This tool needs to fit and function pretty perfectly in order to be worth using and to not hurt stuff.

One more option if all else falls through, many members here have these tools, including me, and can rent or loan them...

Shoot. I wasn`t careful reading. So this 2574 Hazet isn`t going to work. $25 shipped isnt a tragedy though...It was listed as Hazet 2574 vw and audi valve depressor tool.

v8volvo 05-20-2015 01:30 PM

No, that one won't work on a Volvo, but $25 for a nice Hazet one isn't a bad deal anyway. Who knows, maybe you'll end up with an old Rabbit or Jetta someday and be glad you have it. :)
