Oil on top of valve cover
 

Car is '82 245 with stock non-turbo D24 engine. 108,000 miles.

I'm seeing oil collecting on top of the valve cover, near where the vent hose attaches. (The other end of that hose connects to the

I wipe it off with a rag, and it reappears after a hundred miles or so. There isn't a lot, but enough to be noticeable.

I can easily wipe it up but I was wondering if that was telling me something... Or if it indicated an issue of some sort...

Engine doesn't use a lot of oil; it is down a little more than half a quart since the oil was changed 1300 miles ago.

I see often someone has replaced the breather hose with coolant hose...which does not hold up well to oil.
Or the original hose is dry and cracked.

This was my dads car, and was mostly dealer-maintained but it had little attention for ten years or so... So I suspect it is the right part but old.

Time to look for a replacement...

Likely the issue if the hose has never been changed... you could try cranking down the clamp a bit more but the hose is already hard and squashed down like most of them are, unlikely it'll make a lot of difference.

Think I remember that those hoses are NLA from Volvo now, but there are other solutions if it needs replaced.

The good news is I was able to source a replacement breather hose via the dealer. It was backordered to Sweden so it took a while but it has arrived.

Hopefully the old one will come off without too much trouble. The valve-cover end appears to be all-metal so I'm not to worried about it. The other end (on the engine air intake hose) looks fragile... hopefully it won't take too much horsing around to remove the old hose.

I just saw this reply -- sorry for the late response! I'm not sure how I missed it, and since this was from a while ago, it may be old news, but here goes.

I ordered the part from Smith Volvo, in San Luis Obispo CA. Tim has been the parts manager there for many years and has always been helpful.

Not much to it for $28 but such is life. It fit well and greatly reduced the oil grunge that was collecting on the top of the valve cover.

I hope this will be helpful for somebody.

Interested to find out what the hose is made out of. As stated above, coolant hose can substitute but will not hold up well to the oil.

I agree that heater hoses arent the best to be used as vapor hoses etc.
 

Although I have a heater hose/ coolant hose installed underneath my car that is connecting the two 1/2 inch inner diameter hard FUEL lines without any hiccups so far...
My temporary roadside repair is a 4-5 year old miracle by now.
The diesel is known to penetrate and weaken rubbers so idk how but it is holding up pretty well...knock on wood. :)

On this same d24t I installed a 3/4 inch inner diameter heater hose as a crankcase vapor hose (another roadside repair 600miles away from home on a roadtrip, 4+years ago).
It is holding very okay but I am planning to locate the original hose. Suggestions are welcome....idk where to find such an antique rare part. :)
