200 series D24 removal

Is it easier to R&R a D24 in a 200 series with or without the tranny... more specifically a BW55 auto? The D24 in my '84 244 died. Somehow 4 of the 6 Bosch 80010 glow plugs melted, one looks like it was an injector issue, and trashed the pistons and cylinder walls. Not sure what in the hell caused it... so I am swapping motors.

Sorry can't help with your question but 4 out of 6 melted?? Any pics? Got me wanting to check mine now....

What was your timing set to?

I am leaning towards messed up injectors, even though they were rebuilt with Bosch nozzles 5K ago for use in my 82 244. Evidently there are different p/n's for 80-82 vs. 84. I do not think that this was the cause, but the nozzles could be messed up, or perhaps the pop pressure was way wrong. I don't have pictures at the moment.

I think it is easier to remove the engine with the transmission installed. With the M46 it seems you have to drop the trans first or remove it with the engine. I bet you can R&R the engine without removing the transmission it since it's an automatic. The biggest problem is the pan and crossmember clearance.

Well, I am not sure how I will do it. Last time I did one with an M46, it was a pain. My buddy wanted me to take apart far more than necessary to do it. I am trying to do a quick swap so I can get it back on the road...
