Hello from the UK

Hi! I'm Matt from North east England

I recently bought an '87 Volvo 760 Turbo diesel off a friend of mine. Its a d24tic, It had been overheated and I presumed it needed a headgasket and all would be well.

Now I've started looking into it, it's not such a simple task. Also it may not be the headgasket? i'm not sure.

The engine starts ok but quickly starts building revs and P or N and holding it in D on the brakes is the only way to allow the engine to run. Turns off fine with the key so that makes me think that its not just drinking oil. The turbo seals aren't great but I've run the car without the intercooler pipes attached and the problem is still there. It smokes loads, mainly black even at idle so seems like its just getting way too much fuel.

The previous owner did tinker with the pump and boost pressure but I just want it to work at standard power, maybe a different turbo for less lag, maybe other such efficiency based modifications later on. I have a 740 turbo if i'm in a hurry :) I have a 'spacer'? little nylon/plastic ring that is apparently out the pump and is now a keyring.

I'm hoping to get it sorted and back on the road by September. I'm handy with spanners but this is my first diesel. Looking forwards to learning all about the engines and pumps. Was recommended here by a very helpful instagrammer :)

Cheers,
Matt

If the engine shuts down immediately with the key, you probably are not looking at a (dangerous) oil-ingestion-fueled runaway situation.

Turning up the max fuel adjustment too much can cause a high hanging idle and excess soot. You could try backing off the max fuel screw in 1/8 turn increments and see if that solves. Mark the current screw position as a benchmark first.

Can you find out what "adjustments" the P.O. did to the IP?

What caused the overheat and how long did it run overheated?

What nylon ring?

Hi Matt. Hope you get everything straightened out soon. I have a 1985 740 D24T. I need to replace all the fuelinjector hoses and oil pan gasket this month, runs great other than that.

Hi, thanks for the replies!

Overheating was caused by a coolant hose failure, not sure how long it was too hot for but apparently these problems came about straight after.

I'm going to find out exactly whats been changed. Im not sure at all where this spacer ring thing comes from. It's maybe 12mm O.D. and 10mm I.D and about 7mm long. I remember him saying it could be cut down but he removed completely so it sounds like some kind of stop.

Its apparent i need to educate myself on how the pump works and the adjustments possible.

I tried the car without the turbo connected and it's the same. It does have a very leaky injector #1 so sorting that should probably be done first of all.

Once this problem is sorted i want to service and replace parts like the fuel hoses, gaskets, seals hoses etc. but need to know its an ok engine before i spend the cash.

OK, so turned the main smoke screw down about 2.5 turns until the engine became rough at idling, turned it a bit further up so it idled nicely (have no tacho).

Now the two 'stops' i'm guessing ones an idle stop, the other is max 'request'.
I'm guessing the idle one should push the lever to make it idle at a set speed, so i'll need to turn this till it touches, then turn main smoke screw down then turn this one up till it idles nicely.
The max stop... pedal to floor, set screw there?

Injector pipe is leaking at injector one, so need to sort that.

The white plastic thing I was talking about before was from inside the LDA and acted like a stop, that needs to go back.

So now it idles but theres still smoke, guessing because of the air leak at the injector. hopefully it'll just 'nip-up'
