VIN Decoding, What transmission do I have in my car?

My VIN is: YV1DX7641E1057044

Can anyone tell me what trans I have in here?
I'm getting different answers from transmission shops.

Is there a reliable site for VIN decoding of Volvo's? I'm getting conflicting information.

Have you looked to your transmission first ?

m 46 m 47 m 90 are very easy to recognize and auto trans too

Since it is an automatic, there is only one possibility: it is a ZF 4HP-22L. That means trans manufactured by ZF, 4-speed, 22-series, and the L stands for "lockup" referring to the locking torque converter that these units use.

I still owe you info about where transmissions might be found in California... look for a PM.

If you are up for some repair work, a possibility would be to take the main mechanical section out of a transmission of a later vehicle....I would suggest a Land Rover Discovery 1, 1996-1999 that has all the bugs worked out of it, and swap it into the case of yours, keeping the valve block, governor and torque converter all the same the original. The 4HP-22 transmissions all use the same main mechanical section, clutches etc. Its actually not a very difficult job though having the Volvo green book is an absolute must.

Of course I should also mention again that I have a good one in my garage......but its a very long way from California.

If you have debris in yours, make sure you have the torque converter cleaned out.

Well I found out for sure.
It is a ZF 4HP-22L
Although George says the "L" stands for Lockup, I was also told that it stands for Left because the starter is on the left.
Now I have no idea if the starter is on the left, right, or middle.
I thought it was an interesting comment
