Hey all,
New to the forum but sadly my 84 244 diesel done blowd up on me. Yeah she bit the dust. So I'm looking to do an engine swap. I can't seem to find a diesel in the ATL area so I thought I would send a request for suggestions on what other type of motor to swap in her.
Look forward to hearing back.
Dave

Welcome! So what exactly happened? Overheat severely? Run it out of oil?
My suggestion would be to swap in a D24T if your engine is toast.

where are the D24T's?

over heated ! Where can I find a D24T?

Put a head gasket on it, you will only be in it 1/3 the cost of a Chevy 5.3.

Add head studs and you could of bought a 5.3..
Seriously though, what are you wanting to go with the car? Do you have the ability to work on it yourself?
How many miles are on it? How did it run before the overheat? My vote would be to put in a fiber head gasket and a set of head studs and keep driving it.

I believe forum member Wren is also somewhere in GA and might know how to help you get hands on tools, parts, maybe even a D24T engine if you decide that's the direction you want to go. You should be able to find his posts here.

Otherwise, if it didn't get cooked too badly, putting a headgasket and possibly studs like folks said might be your easiest/cheapest route to getting it back on the road. Putting in a turbo motor instead would certainly wake the car up quite a bit though, and if your current motor got hot enough to bend the head, cook rings, etc, then starting over with a different motor might look like a more straightforward option.

How hot did it get, and what were the circumstances, i.e. how soon did you catch it? Did it blow a hose and lose all the water, or did it get hot with coolant still in it climbing a hill?

Not sure how hot it was since my temp gauge hasn't been working. I was driving doing about 55 when I heard the engine knocking really bad, so I turned around to head home when the engine cut. After that it wouldn't turn over, just a click. I had it towed home. Was looking at engine replacement but right now that too much money.. Not sure what I'm going to do.

Sounds like that motor is toast.

There's a guy who posted here a couple of weeks ago, in Oklahoma, who is trying to get rid of a good-running D24 engine and transmission and sounds like price would be pretty flexible. http://www.d24t.com/showthread.php?p=9413#post9413
Maybe that would be a good option for you?

You gotta fix that temperature gauge. ;)
