starter motors again
 

I can hear the teeth going on my D24T starter motor (in my Land Rover) and last time I had trouble identifying the right one.

Can anyone explain which engines have the open face starter motor, and which ones have the cowling and end bearing?

All the direct drive starters have a cone with a support bushing, the hitachi units are gear reduction and do not have the end support.

Thanks - and therefore does anyone know which engines were fitted with a starter motor (sorry I can't abbreviate it to s/m!) with reduction gear and which were direct drive?
