View Full Version : Front Camshaft Seal?

I'm in the middle of replacing the timing belts on my 85 740- finally got all the parts and tools together!

It's going fairly smoothly, but I have found that the camshaft seal I bought from NAPA is not correct. The diameter of the seal is right, but it's just not thick enough in terms of depth, if that makes sense. All the other auto parts stores show the same "thin" seal.

Does anyone know what the part number of the correct seal is, so that I can interchange it at the parts store or just call my Volvo dealer?

Oh, and I'm taking pictures of the timing belt job and plan to post it to my blog in case anyone is ever curious about how difficult it is. For me, the hardest part was sourcing the tools ( the 5187 in particular, which I borrowed from a fellow forum member ). So far the job has gone very smoothly, although I've been quite paranoid about keeping the cam & crank absolutely stationary at TDC. We'll see how it turns out when I'm finished, I guess.

1 257 221-0 is the oem volvo number.

10 mm thick
37 mm in diam
42 mm out diam


don't be paranoid on the tdc
just check tdc and camshaft position with the special plate after several manual rotations.
be paranoid on the cranck bolt torque and pin alignment.

The only other oddity I ran into was that the lower timing gear seems to be attached to the vibration damper/crank pulley- as far as I can tell, they're one piece- came out as one piece and I can't see where they separate. Are they all this way? The green book shows the timing gear remaining on the crankshaft, but I'm using a non-turbo green book.

They are certainly glued together by the crap.
they are two separate pieces bolted by 4 little allen bolts and fully removable from the crank.
Clean them well before to reassembly.

If anyone runs into the same cam seal issue in the future, here's the VW part number for the cam seal- 026 103 085 D - they were in stock at my local euro parts store.
