My first Volvo was my 1977 245 wagon that has been though the family. It had a B21f with a Bw55. I've owned a lot of redblocks, after seeing a D24 in a 240 for the first time I knew I had to get one.

So, I bought a 1982 Diesel that had a Bw55 that I found sitting by someone's house. I asked the owner if he wanted to sell it and how much you want for it. So I ended up paying $500 for it. The body had 300K and I was told the motor had about 100K on it.

It's hard to belive how can someone treat a car like how they did even when their the original owner of the car. When the guy was showing me the car he spilt antifreaze all over the passenger side seat and all over the floor. And I did not even get a key for the doors. What I thought was the best part he tells me that the big bend in the hood is from him slamming his body on the hood to get it shut.

Here are some pictures of the car

After a long search for a M46 with a D24 bellhousing I found this in Tacoma Washington for $300

My dad was a big part of this project. For a living my dad is a body men for the last 20 years. I could have not done any of this with out him.

My brother Scott clean the engine bay with the pressure washer. Took my dad's pogo stick (that what he calls it:p) to straighten out the right side apron. Due to the wreck the car had to go on a frame rack because the passenger side was push up about inch and a half. I don't have a frame rack at my house so we had to improvise. My dad came up with the idea to use the Suburban that weights about 8 thousand pounds to push down on the car.

Wow, thanks for posting this! I wish I had someone to help me with my build. My dad's not too mechanically inclined. He showed me how to change my oil way back when, but for everything else I've pretty much been on my own. Of course it doesn't hurt to live in the dot com age! Without the help of enthusiast forums like this, I'd be completely lost. I really love how your silver car looks with the single round headlamps and flat hood. That look is starting to appeal to me more and more each day. Also, your exhaust sounds great. Is that with the glasspack you mentioned in your other thread?

Nice car. I have a turbodiesel in my car with overdrive trans. I have turned up the pressure a lot and turned the fuel pump. Nice engines and sound.

I do have a dead D24 on an engine stand with a manifold. My plan is maybe rebuild that in the future. I would asked Kevin (Slobodan) he has a lot of D24 N/A parts.

Looks and sounds nice. What did you go with for a radiator arrangement? Looks quite different. I like the use of the slim electric fan -- the noise the clutchless mechanical fan makes on a D24 is really a racket and gets in the way of the straight six music. Would be much better without the fan. Assume you left the pulley on there in order for the belt to the PS pump to still have a place to go?

Nice work. Let me know about valve adjustment... any weekend this month is cool for me.

Hah, my 245 looked a little like that when I first got it... definitely in need of TLC. Amazing how Volvos hold up though -- even on a car that is pretty beat, a little cleaning up and replacing some parts makes them look pretty good again. I should post some picture updates of mine... hell of a lot better than it was a couple months ago.

Your final product sure does look and sound nice. What did you go with for a radiator? Looks quite different, out of a non-Volvo car of some kind? I like the use of the slim electric fan -- the noise the clutchless mechanical fan makes on a D24 is really a racket and gets in the way of the straight six music. Would be much better without the fan, or with a clutch fan like the D24T. I guess they were pinching pennies with the D24, or maybe there was no room for a clutch... space is pretty tight in there. Assume you left the pulley on there in order for the belt to the PS pump to still have a place to go?

Nice work. Let me know about valve adjustment... any weekend this month is cool for me.

Yoy cant have a clutch fan. I have tried:p And his radiator is from a b23 engine.

In the build pictures the radiator is from a 700 series gasser. Here is a current picture of my setup. The radiator is from a 92+ 740 or 940 not sure which one. I'm using a 17 inch E-fan I bought from Jegs.

I ended up trading my 1985 244 for the 760 turbodiesel. I just got it towed to my house yesrterday and pulled the motor today. The battery in the car was split in two from the wreck, amd there is battery acid all over the motor. I grab one of my batteries and started it right up. The radaitor was damage from the wreck so there was no coolant, I ran the car for a minute to see how well it runs and shut it off. Right now I'm thinking of putting the D24T in the 264. The D24 N/A that is already in the car will be taken apart to see what is the real problem I'm having.

Yea, it was on CL. The only reason the car was on CL is that the guy that had it forgot my number. I've already made a deal with hin a week earlier. He had the car for $850. I traded a running 85 244 with a B230 for the turbodiesel.

Sounds like a good deal, how many miles are on it? You will love the turbo diesel, I cant immagine driving even the smaller 2xx car with the non turbo.

I was told this car was worked on by Chris Bogue and rebuilt a year ago. The guy I bought the car from said 60K miles on the motor. No paper work to prove the maintenance. The shop where Chris used to worked at was called Volvos Only a very well known shop here in Portland for having a bad reputation but not the only one. Now Chris is working at another shop in SW Portland called MVP Volvo. I talked to him before about my own D24, I'm thinking to go see him tonorrow to get more imformation about the motor.
I've been very busy cleaning the turbodiesel, It's not as bad as the D24 that is in my 264 now. I like to clean motor in my car so I got my parts cleaner again and started to clean.

What, you should at least drive one if you have a chance. My D24 is not that slow, and I've never driven a turbodiesel yet. It's fun car to drive and I'm seeing 34 MPG and my other Volvo with a B21F with a 3 speed Auto is slower and only gets 23.

I bought gaskets and IP and timing belts to replace and water pump. While I'm at it I'm thinking of doing the rear main and front. I don't have much money as I did on the D24 build but I don't think I will need to put a lot.

engine swap? Maybe adding IC too, atleast you have N/A manifold there.

I want to do the swap as soon as I can. I still need to figure out the oil return location on the D24 oil pan. V8volvo said he is actually doing the same swap at work so I very curious how they do it. Im still need to do the water pump, timing belt and IP belt. After that the D24 in the 264 is coming out and putting the D24T in with the M46. I'm planing on IC it, I want to keep this swap very simple so I can be on the road again because this is my daily driver. After that I want to make my own stainless steel headers and bigger turbo:)

Oh yeah, I was going to take a picture of the setup we have for you. It runs back from the turbo then enters the sump at the flat horizontal spot on the right side of the motor, with the tube running in such a way that you cannot use a Bosch starter -- only the Hitachi unit will fit on this engine. The engine is all set up to bolt into the shop owner's cherry '84 240 diesel sedan with a tired D24, but we haven't had time to drop it in yet.

Just started back on this project a mounth ago. Need to finish this before the 17th of December. The motor is in with 240 oil pan with a welded bung for the drip line. Using stock 240 diesel motor mounts. Sits in the engine bay just as like a N/A would. The stock turbo clears the frame rail within an inch.
Replaced all the brakes. center driveline support and will be using turbo 240 exhaust.

will have pictures soon of my progress

I used freeze plugs to plug the rear water port on the d24t head since I won't be using the vw oil cooler. Also plug the 240 dipstick with a freeze plug since will be using the d24t dipstick location.

Can you take pictures of your oil pan modification? I plan to do the same with my swap eventually. Sounds like you're making some good progress!

Edit: Also, will the dipstick reading from the stock D24T location still be accurate with the 240's engine position? If you could, please post pics of how you plugged the head and dipstick. Thanks!
