I have decided to replace the front struts on my car but have a question. Many brands do not have struts for a 84 but list them for 85 and on. Does anyone know what the difference is? I was really wanting to put KYB on my car but they only show from 85 and on? Will 85 and latter struts work or is there a big difference? The production date on my 760 is 2/84.

1983 and 1984 760s have many differences compared to the 1985+ cars, and one of them is the front struts. They will not interchange with the later type, as far as I know. The early cars have a setup that looks more like what's on a 240 than the 1985+ 700 setup.

Do you know if a 1983 760 uses similar suspension to any others?

Strut housing is an expensive part, I hope mine is not junk yet. Thanks, the above quoted info is good to know when I end up searching in the local junkyards IF the strut housing inner top lost its threads... (up until what year do you think they are interchangeable for my 1986 brick?
Also, I was not successful locating gland nuts but I`m sure someone here knows where to order them from (and what type). Idea about *anything else* (for example: additional parts) that I must think about when replacing the strut inserts? I don`t want to reuse stuff that should be new parts. I haven`t seen a Volvo strut dismantled for many long years... luckily. Thanks

Just this month I took a pair of front struts off a 1991 745 (Wagon/5 door) and put them on my 1985 745. They were different but they did fit. The differences I noticed were: the newer struts with the axle and hub were set up for ABS brakes and the axle nut was much larger (It's likely a different bearing per this "brickboard" link:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FrontSuspension.htm#FrontWheelBearingandTwoPartHub Rebuild). Despite these differences the old brake rotor still fit perfectly. I just left the hole for the ABS sensor empty. The brake caliper attached to the spindle even though the 1991 brakes only had one piston whereas my 1985 has two pistons.

I've driven the car over 1,000 miles since the swap and all seems just fine.

I got both complete struts with spindle and hub for under $100 at my local Pick-n-Pull. I've saved the originals for a rebuild and will put in new struts, dust boots and bump stops once it's necessary.

I'd stay with the new a style for bigger brakes.
Gland nuts should be a cheap- free junkyard part.
If the threads are FUBAR,you can cut the top off another housing, and weld it to your strut, You'll want to do a decent job, but it isn't really under that much load.
