The short and sweet version of this is that I am selling a rebuilt D24T with a conversion kit that includes all of the parts needed to install it in a gas engined car. This motor was stock in 83-86 740&760's here, and was used into the 900 series in Europe.

This posting will be long, apologies in advance.

To the best of my knowledge, this setup will be a bolt in mod on a 740/760, and I am 95% certain it would fit a 940 as well. The only problem I anticipate would be getting the transmission shifter to work if using the automatic trans I have, since it's a ZF and you need the ZF shifter. I think the chassis attachment is the same so the ZF shift pot would drop in, but the interior is different on the later 760's & 940's and I do not know if it would all fit right.

This motor could also probably go in a 240 or 960 or ??? but that's more of a custom job.

**I will also consider selling just the rebuilt motor**

Here's a list of what all is included:

-Rebuilt D24T diesel engine w/ new rings & bearings, pistons, gaskets & seals, head, timing belts, water pump, motor mounts, rebuilt wiring harness, resealed injection pump, 2 new bosch glow plugs & 4 good used bosch glow plugs, glow plug controller, good used alternator & starter, good used PS& AC pumps.
-Front crossmember
-Used ZF5-4HP22 automatic trans. (4 speed od w/ lockup) I believe this unit to be removed from a car w/ 60k original miles on it and to be in good shape but have no way of testing it. The trannies were also used in mid 80's non turbo 700's and I believe they are fairly easy to rebuilt should it prove necessary. Also note that this trans has a poor reputation in the gas cars, but I have never heard of a bad one behind a diesel most likely because they fail due to being reved in park, such as commonly done for smog testing in gas cars.
-Drive line
-Rear trans crossmember & driveline center support bearing
-Front springs (from a 84 760TD sedan) These are almost certainly stiffer than the gasser springs for the heavier engine
-Core radiator
-Good used turbo
-Complete exhaust system in good shape
-Front grill and 'turbo diesel' emblems
-Fuel tank and lines (probably easiest to use the gasser tank, but if you don't I've got the diesel tank & fuel lines)
-AC compressor hoses (suction & discharge) and PS pressure line
-Air filter box and hoses
-Coolant expansion bottle
-Used radiator & assorted heater hoses
-Battery cables & tray
-Early 740 type instrument cluster with diesel tachometer. It is also possible to use the gas tach, but you need a conversion box (~$65)

Also includes several 'green book' Volvo service manuals;

TP 31134/1 Reconditioning D24T/TIC 10/87
TP 30831/1 Reconditioning ZF 4 HP-22 Trans 07/85
TP 30687/1 Fault tracing, repairs & maintenance, Power Train, 700 1/86
TP 30800/1 Wiring Diagrams, 84 760; 85 740/760 sedan & wagon 6/85
TP 30571/1 D24 turbo diesel Fault tracing, repairs & maintenance 11/84

And, also the special tools to set the cam & injection timing when doing a timing belt. Plus whatever parts I've forgotten to list.

Parts that would still be needed:
-Injectors. I have a set of okay used ones, but they're worn and didn't pop test well. Reman injectors can be has for ~$50 each.
-Radiator. Either rebuilt the one I've got (or I can get it done locally) or buy a new one. I can get a manual diesel radiator for ~$180. Also, I have heard several accounts of the B230FT radiator being used and working okay.
-Radiator hoses & misc coolant lines. The main radiator hoses are not hard to get, but there's quite a few little lines that are dealer only, but most could probably be replaced with heater hose & some fittings.
-Oil Cooler. Stock these use a sandwich cooler like the VW diesels & water boxer motors. I don't have a good one, but the VW unit seems to be the same and is easy to find. Alternatively, a B21/230FT style air to oil cooler looks like it would be fairly easy to fit, and I have one that I will include if desired.

As far as transmissions go, I am selling this setup with the slushbox. I have access to a 240/D24 parts car that has a good M46 though if you want a stick. However, the bellhousing is different between the 240&740 apparently due to the motor being mounted at a different angle. I do not know how severe this difference is, I have heard of 740 auto trannies being used on 240's and working okay, so maybe the manual would as well. There is also a 740 manual trans w/ bellhousing on ebay for $150 last time I checked. Or use just find a bellhousing for my trans.

I am located near sacramento CA, and can deliver within a reasonable area. Beyond that, frieght shipping looks like $300-400 for the entire kit, maybe less depending on where you are. Less for the motor, but not too much.

As far as pricing, I would like to get ~$2000 for this setup. Talking to my machinist, the motor work alone is worth $2500+, and this is a pretty rare setup. These are good motors, but most of the ones you can get these days are worn out. Here's one that isn't and should be good for many miles.

Stock these are rated at ~105 hp, (roughly the same as an NA redblock) the later intercooled D24TIC get's closer to 125 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) and it wouldn't be hard to get more. It's all mechanical, so no chips or anything needed, just turn the screw up. I believe I've heard of 200+ hp, although I'm not sure how much I'd trust that.

I'd also expect to get ~30 mpg out of this, maybe closer to 35 with a manual. When I was driving one of these cars I was getting 25-27 as I recall with an auto trans, but with a worn motor.

*Also as part of this setup I have the add on fuel tank that sits in the front of the trunk on a sedan and ads ~5 gallons of fuel. I will sell this and the hoses that go will it separately as well*

I have pictures and more info if desired, and if you have any questions after reading the novel of diesel there please fell free to ask.
Thanks ~ John

Also, I mentioned I have all the tools to do a timing belt. I should correct that a bit because I realize that could be misinterpreted.

What I have is basically the "vw diesel timing belt tool kit" you see on on ebay alot. It has the cam locking tool, (which is a bit funky) injection pump locking pin and the dial gauge holder and dial gauge for the injection pump timing. These are the essential tools you need, but this is not the official Volvo tool kit. It also has the gear puller tool you need to remove the injection pump sproket from the pump shaft.

Would you be interested in selling the green books?

I had been just planning to keep them with the kit, but the more I think about it, I guess I don't have to. What are they worth to you?
Thanks ~ John

I'm really only interested in the two that are D24 specific for engine stuff.

TP 31134/1 Reconditioning D24T/TIC 10/87 and
TP 30571/1 D24 turbo diesel Fault tracing, repairs & maintenance 11/84

They are 40 and 28 new. If you want to get rid of all of them at once, I would say $100 for the set? I don't know how reasonable that is, but I'll start there.

I wouldn't make you buy all of them, no reason to.

I would not be opposed to selling the two manuals you mention. Do you want the ZF one? I thought you were looking for info on that trans, but maybe I have you confused with another member.

Are these old of manuals still available new? I'd have thought they'd be out of print.

On a different tangent, I have a D24 car with an M46, everything but the bellhousing would fit the 24T, and it sounds like Tom B on the other list has a spare bellhousing. Shipping would be a few $$$, but probably not *that* much.

I was looking for info, but I found out everything I wanted to know. Thanks for the offer on that manual, but if the auto crapped out that would be an even better excuse to swap to the manual.

I will keep the trans in mind, I have some "spring cleaning" maintenance to do, and I need to buy new tires as well. Once everything else is up to par, I'll start seriously looking into the manual swap.

If you just want to sell me the two diesel manuals that would be great. They are available still, at https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.cfm?event=item.view&itemClass=service%2Cparts&itemType=Service%20Manuals&itemSubType=&modelName=760&modelyear=1984&startRow=1&endRow=20&page=1

If you want, pm me what you would like for them, I have paypal.

Thanks,
Jason

What is this add on fuel tank that you have? I have never heard of this.

It's a tank that sits in the forward part of the truck (between the wheel wells and right behind the rear seat) and connects into the main fuel tank. I think it adds somthing like 5 gallons? I don't think they're too common.

Ufortunetely I don't have any good pics of just the tank. I can try to get some if you're interested.

Not sure what it's worth, make me an offer.

I took some pictures today, but can't find my camera cable. :(

I do have the parts diagram that shows how it goes together, see http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2479796300043637851dvqpey (here.) The diagram for the standard tank is also loaded in that album, and the aux tank and parts is visable in some of the kit pics, but hard to really see.

It looks like the line go through the existing fuel tank access hole in the trunk, so no major surgey required. Might have to drill a few holes for hold down bolts though.

I have the filler pipe (looks like it's different than a single tank) and the tee hose. There's a smaller (~1/2") line going from the aux tank to the main that I think I should have but can't find. I think it's not a molded hose and could be replaced with 1/2" fuel hose. There's also a vent hose you'd need to put together, but it's just 3/16" (maybe) line so that's simple.

I have no idea at all what it is worth. Give me a ballpark figure. Thanks.

Well shoot.... Maybe $150? $100??? No idea. What's it worth to you? Shipping might be a bit too unless you can come pick it up. Not real heavy, but it's pretty bulky. Probably be in the large package category & say 20#?

Still can't find my camera cable, but I will get some pics to you.
Thanks ~ John

I also have the filler pipe (where the gas cap screws into) since it appears to be different.
