View Full Version : 2600 psi pop pressure.

So I realized today that I mixed up the numbers and had my injectors set to 2600 psi when I sent them out to have the GTD nozzles installed. I Drove the car about 80 miles and then set the injection pump timing to 1 mm. Prior to setting timing the Exhaust sounded pretty bad, almost like a misfire and crackly at lower revs , Little bit of blue smoke at idle which I've seen before with overly retarded timing. That's almost totally gone away now. I have a 12 mm super pump to put on still, should I put this pump on now and advanced timing a tad bit more or should I suck it up and send the injectors back and have them reset to 2400psi like I originally intended? either way I guess the pump has to go on. Question is in reference to my white 85, modifications are listed in my signature.

You should be fine at 2600 psi. Do you know what they did to get them that high? That's approx 180 bar, stock is 150. I'm wondering if they shimmed it that much or replaced the springs. The VE pump is capable of producing much higher pressures then that, so on the pump side your safe. I think once you go to the 12mm pump you find that 1.0mm of timing will be fine. Every setup is different though, depending on engine condition, HG thickness, and even the pump.
Your engine may sound like a 24valve cummins with the pop that high and a 12mm pump though.

You may encounter a broken injector spring with the 12mm pump and the pop pressures that high if those are indeed the stock springs. You will know when it happens!

lol geez broken springs? I don't know what they did, probly just shimmed them. also I cant even hear the 740 running if I have my truck running(99 24V). I was using the truck to charge the battery after doing the injectors in the 740. I would like to do the 12mm pump soon since ive had it a freakin year already. I'm about 230 miles into a tank of fuel now and I'm at half a tank. I'm hoping for at least 400 miles out of it. I had been romping it a bit in the begining to "test and tune" it.

Not trying to highjack your thread, this is somewhat related as I have a setup close to yours.

I started my D24T for the first time (12mm pump, GTD nozzles, HY35 turbo). Intake piping not installed (turbo just dumping boost). I ran it down the road, and as expected, it dumps black smoke when I lay into it.

But this is what I didn't expect: When I'm around 50% throttle, I get black smoke. Once I push it more, say 90% throttle, the black smoke starts to fade to more of a grey or white color (engine up to temp). I'm assuming this is raw fuel not even burning? My question here is- should I be concerned? Should I try changing the pump timing a little?

I'm going to finish completing the intake piping so it can have some boost before I change anything though. Just thought I'd ask in case it didn't change anything.

If no turbo you are not supplying sufficient oxygen to burn the extra fuel, hence the black smoke. Your diagnosis of the white smoke as extremely unburnt fuel makes sense to me. I would wait until the turbo is functioning as planned until attempting to dial everything in. With nonfunctioning turbo, keep an eye on the EGTs.

I plumbed the intercooler back in, and test drove it. Takes a while to spool the turbo, no boost below about 2500 RPM. Starts to build to 5 PSI around 3000, and finally really increases to 25 + PSI above about 3500 RPM. It does clean up the smoke a lot by this time too. (No more white, raw fuel smoke).

So is the Nitrous kit I can add to get rid of the lag at low RPM? lol

I am going to put license plates on it this week, and try to break-in all the new parts (clutch, engine, turbo).

i seem to be able to make 5 psi by about 2600 ish, but by 3500 im barely making 10 or 12psi. im only able to make a max of about 15psi currently. gonna try and make time to do the super pump this weekend.

What turbo are you running?

Once this thing makes boost, it's on! But getting the initial ball rolling takes a minute for the pig to spool....

The super pump is worth it though. It pushes a crazy amount of fuel. (that reminds me, I need to get that EGT gauge hooked up.....

Are you running that Holset that you got from me? You can change the turbine housing to smaller one to get better response. I believe that one has a 14cm housing, you can get a 12cm or even try to find a 9cm.

Nitrous I always thought would be a neat idea.

I'm not sure how to tell. it has the 4" V band outlet. I would love a 9cm housing if mine is bigger.

Oh ok - mine has the 4 bolt flange like the stock turbo. It was at a slightly different angle though, so I ended up converting it to a 2.5" V band.

ohh ok, mine is 4" turbo back and out the side. ill look into housings on break today. I was looking into billet comp. wheels as they are lighter with different blade designs and will allow for faster spool.

Spencer- you have what is called an H1C holset, I never got a chance to measure the wheels on it, but it should have a 58mm exducer or might even have a 55mm exducer on the turbine. Maybe you can get the wheel measurements?

Russ- if you have a hy35 it will have a 9cm turbine housing on it stock, the he351 has the 12cm housing. I believe the turbine exducer is 58mm, it might be a 60mm though. I might go out and measure my hy35.
