it sits between the gearbox and engine

Bellhousing for an m46, and off a d24? Best bet is probably to look in Europe since it will be a rarer part in the US where manual transmission isn't as common.

I have a feeling there might be a difference between those for 200series cars and for 700series due to the angle of the engine? Not sure, but maybe someone more knowledgable than I can help.

Yes, 240 series and 7xx/9xx series have different bell housings. I have a half dozen 240 housings, but only one 7xx/9xx housing. It seems that most 240 diesels came with a manual and most 7xx/9xx diesels came with the zf automatic.
