Hey all, im Roch I live in gatineau, quebec..

Found a 1985 760 turbo diesel d24t just sitting in a driveway for the past 12 years, asked the owner if he wanted to sell it and he's thinking about it

So car wont start but cranks, took old filter off and replace with new fuel, used starting fluid and just read that I am not supposed to so I threw it in the garbage today

I am joy expecting it ti run and drive but I would like to hear it run even if its a minute or so

Any clue what I could do to run it before buying it ?

Ask them why it was sitting for 12 years and go from there...

Water pump was leaking, car comes with a new one and the owner is at 91 years old he parked it after knowing the pump was leaking and didn't want to fix it and license was going to be revoked a few years after he found out the leaky pump

OK so if it used to start and run reliably when parked due to only a leaky waterpump, we can presume the glowplugs are still functioning and the IP is timed correctly.

I bet it would start if you squirted a teaspoon of motor oil into each combustion chamber. 12 years is a long time to expect whatever oil was helping to seal the piston rings to still be there.

Here's an idea: Remove the front four glowplugs (the easiest), test them to make sure they're good, and while they're out, give a couple of squirts of motor oil from an old-style oilcan with a long skinny nozzle into each glowplug hole. Button it back up, and try starting with a charged-up strong battery. 20 sec. cranking, let it rest one minute, try again.

I'd rig a can of fresh fuel( personally, I'd blend in some new ATF too), in 12 years, whatever is in the tank has lost a bit of volatility.

pull the fuel hoses off the fender, and run longer ones to a clean can of good fuel placed above injection pump height.

a word of caution, the water pump probably didn't start leaking till the timing belt was almost toast 12 years ago, and if that belt breaks, it's game over for that motor.

Folks say ATF has detergent properties.

TG is saying if the T-belt breaks that will send the pistons into the valves and vice-versa. Definitely an interference engine. Take a careful look at it (both sides) before you make your decision to run the engine.

Parts sources? Depends on which parts.

I've gotten some from worldpac,
autohausaz
fcpgorton
gowesty
rockauto
tasca
and local bosch repair shop

It's highly detergent, and a lubricant

More than that, it will break the cam, tearing the cam journals out of the head almost every time. This is not repairable unless you happen to TIG weld cylinder heads for a living,or have a few grand to pay someone who does.
